While my earlier blog entry to install the 'official' savage 1 freeware still works, the fine folks at www.newerth.com has packaged the latest binary of Savage: The battle of Newerth. "Our aim is to keep the Savage1 community together as gamers migrate to play Savage 2 (when it is released) and to provide services for and information on the games."

About Savage

Savage: The Battle for Newerth is set in a dystopian future where surviving humans continually war with an intelligent beast race. The humans follow the lead of Jereziah Grimm, and their research into humanity's forgotten technologies and weapons leads to significant gains against the Beast Horde. However, a human female named Ophelia, disgusted by the excesses and brutality of the Legion of Man, joins the beasts and teaches them the secrets of human warfare. Under Ophelia's masterful direction, the Beast Horde cultivates their knowledge of arcane magic. These new tactics prove successful, forcing the Legion of Man to counterattack, and a fierce battle for the future of New Earth is joined.

Players have the choice of fighting for the Legion of Man or the Beast Horde. Savage is a massive online game and two gameplay modes are available; players can choose to be a commander and direct other players in a real-time strategy game full of resource management and tactical skills. However, users can also choose to be warriors for either side and play through Savage in a first-person shooter mode. Both modes offer an assortment of unique challenges.

Savage is an OpenGL game, and will require the device's drivers to be installed (and configured). Try Envy if the default drivers are to old. ""Envy" is an application for Ubuntu Linux and Debian written in Python and PyGTK which will detect the model of your graphic card (ATI and Nvidia cards are supported).
