A wide variety of people gather on Uwars to build an army, team together (alliances), and destroy their enemies. A wide variety of units, as well as the Spycraft feature and much more, makes it a game definitely worth playing.

Easy-Peasy Guild Wars on Ubuntu Linux

This brief blog entry will note the simple steps to installing and playing Guild Wars on any ol' (well, min requirements apply) Ubuntu Linux system. This task is done using Wine, as CrossOver & Cedega cost money. Wine is a software application which aims to allow Unix-like computer operating systems on the x86 architecture to execute programs that were originally written for Microsoft Windows. Wine also provides a software library known as Winelib which developers can compile Windows applications against in order to port them to Unix-like systems.

While my earlier blog entry to install the 'official' savage 1 freeware still works, the fine folks at www.newerth.com has packaged the latest binary of Savage: The battle of Newerth. "Our aim is to keep the Savage1 community together as gamers migrate to play Savage 2 (when it is released) and to provide services for and information on the games."

Battle for Wesnoth 1.2.7 (stable) Released Due to DoS

I didn't expect to blog twice in the same day regarding Linux gaming, yet anyhow... Battle for Wesnoth is a free turn based strategy game for personal computers released under the GNU General Public License. The Wesnoth team has released a DoS update, bring the stable release to v1.2.7. This is a bugfix release for 1.2.x and it is compatible with the other 1.2.x versions. "The main reason for this release was an important fix where an utf8 char at the wrong position in a chatmessage could crash other clients." This bug was filled as CVE-2007-3917.

It's been a long, grueling wait for Alien Arena fans, but version 6.10 is finally here! Linux.com has declared that Alien Arena 6.10 "Blows away it's FPS competition!", and now you can find out why! Major changes, enhancements, and surprises!. 7 brand new arenas, more balanced/responsive weapon set, 1v1 (duel mode), improved gameplay, weapons respawn in five seconds, Q3 style health/ammo system, random spawning quad, & a brand new weapon (the Violator.)

Alien Arena 2007 is a free standalone deathmatch game based on GPL id software source code. Created by COR Entertainment in 2004, the game combines a campy 50's era sci-fi atmosphere with gameplay similar to the Quake, Doom, and Unreal Tournament series. This game focuses on online multiplayer action, but also has single player campaigns against bots. The game has been released for both Microsoft Windows and Linux, and currently stands at version 6.04. Alien Arena has been free to the public and does not charge any fees for online play since it's inception.
